Back Page - The Guys - Page 2

Here he is. The Guy. Husband, father, boyfriend, son, service man and just the guy that lives down the street. He is not as comfortable in front of the camera as the girls. He often looks awkward, out of place, embarrassed.

THE KIDS Lesson one.
It is always a mystery how a photograph of any of these precious children could end up lost or abandoned. Here are a few. You will probably say "Ooh..." at least once.

  1. Real guys, every one of them. Brown Fruit Co. got a laugh out loud. And a chuckle for Mr. Bowler Hat trying different manly poses against a cheap frenchyfied backdrop. The corporal with the camera has a Speed Graphic, I believe. My dad had three in his collection, though I don't think he ever took more than just a few photos with them. They were big and awkward to focus. The flash and film negative attachments added to the weight too. It took real skill to take a good photograph. Sadly I had to sell the collection earlier this summer, but I have come to appreciate the craft required to use the early camera technology.

    1. Thanks Mike Brubaker. Yes, the Brown Fruit Co. is a favorite of mine. The Bowler Hat photographs are from the same album as the guy appearing to be ready to punch another on the Fake Fight page. (I was never sure if it was a trick shot or not. They have the same face and moustache but different clothing.) http://lostgallery.blogspot.com/2010/08/fake-fight.html
I was able to use a Speed Graphic camera back some years ago when I worked in a camera shop. Classic old camera, but as you say, not easy to use. Too bad you had to let your collection move on.
