Back Page - Three Children

Trio in the studio

Connections.

Here are a few very old photographs of children; some are a century old. Each is a group of three and that is one connection between them, although the portraits may actually be decades apart in time.

Somehow these children have another similarity. Most of their faces reflect their difficult world, their difficult futures. Some are assured but some look worried, tired and even afraid.

There were luxuries that were unknown to some of them: running water, plumbing, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, store-bought toys. But they didn’t know about them so they didn’t miss them. They only knew or anticipated their own world. Their own world was hard. They knew how to work.

Look at them. Most look like little adults, not children.

They are connected in a world they made, a world they made and left for us.

So when we find a portrait with one of the children actually smiling, it really stands out.
