B17G the Nine-Oh-Nine
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to add one more "Snow" picture. This is probably the rarest in the whole LOST GALLERY collection. It comes from a set of over 300 35mm negatives rescued from the basement of an antique store. See the entire set named
IN THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND
on Flickr.

For other examples from that set see the LOST Gallery page named
AAF Identification and Comment

This is the legendary B-17G, serial number 42-31909, named 'Nine-O-Nine', of the 323rd Bombardment Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group. It is waiting for the next mission, parked at Bassingbourn Air Force Base in the winter of 1944-45

'Nine-O-Nine' completed 140 missions without one crew fatality, and I believe there were no injuries either. She survived the war and was scrapped at the great bone-yard in Kingman, Arizona.
(Thanks to Hawk914 on Flickr for the identification.

It's a Sepia Saturday Suggestion.

As always, as new photographs on this subject turn up, they will be added to this page. Watch this space!

Or maybe you'd prefer just a list of all (well, most) of the categories and subjects and album pages in LOST GALLERY! Here it is!

  8. I especially like the ones with the old cars.

  9. For some reason winter always looks colder in sepia tone. The photos of fighter planes and bombers were very interesting, not the typical documentary images.

  10. Oh what fun it always is to stop by and view your collection of photos!

  11. Abandoned no longer. You'll always find them a home at Sepia Saturday.

  12. Can you imagine driving a car with those bicycle-like wheels? No wonder they got stuck! But they made fine pictures!

  13. Thanks Kathy M. They have been accumulating a long time.

Thanks Postcardy. They look so helpless in the snow, don’t they?

Thanks Mike Brubaker. Yes, that set of photographs from Bassingbourn Air Base is quite unusual.

    Thanks Karen S. Come again!

    Thanks Brett Payne. Yes indeed!

Thanks Peter. Those narrow wheels never looked sturdy enough to me. I think they might be worthless in snow.

  14. Thanks, Little Nell. I had more of them than I thought.

  15. I'm snowed under with all these snow photos. The cat looked rather large; the plane photos were interesting.

  16. Thanks Bob Scotney. I get your drift. Maybe that big cat it is a mountain lion. Probably just a big cat.

The aircraft photographs are very interesting to me also. The B-17 is quote a rare shot.

  17. A grand selection showing how snow turns adults into kids with snow. It always does. There's a wonder to snow that's so lovely. And then it's so much fun to play in. Then there's the other side of it...digging it out of the way. Not so much fun.

  18. A great collection and my fave is of those two women walking the path up the hill, casually talking together, not posing, with a lovely scenery in the valley below.

  19. Had Holli and her friend lost their minds??? In snow. In a dress. In high heels. Crazy girls just wanna have fun.

  20. I'm sorry it took me so long to get over to your page. What a great bunch of photos. Each one a story.

  21. Thanks Tattered and Lost. Snow certainly makes people act crazy sometimes.

Thanks TICKLEBEAR: Yes that's a good one. In fact any photograph that is really candid has an edge on the posed ones I think.

Thanks Wendy. As you might have noticed, Holli and her friends are rarely without big smiles. And they are usually dressed to the nines.

Thanks Kristin. Yes, I see that too. Abandoned photographs do seem to have stories to tell
