Sepia Saturday -Transportation

For this Sepia Saturday Suggestion there is a photograph of some new (at the time) automobiles loaded up on rail road flat cars. They're headed presumably, to the waiting new car dealers all poised with a manager sale, a Mother's Day sale, an inventory clearance sale, a door-buster sale or any one of their myriad gimmicks to entice customers to their lot.

I think LOST GALLERY only has a couple of photographs of double transportation, (one mode carrying another) so after we present those, let's go on and see just how many different modes of transportation we can find.

Here then for Sepia Saturday, today, are two photographs of automobiles on a ferry boat.

Man watching ferry

Now that's out of the way let's see what else we can find.

Ferry

Proof!

Starting off with Mules and Donkeys. Do you know the difference? Basically they are not genetically related at all, yet belong to the same family of animals. (I know, confusing isn't it?) Outwardly, the donkey is almost always smaller than a mule.

So here we have one of each (I think).

Four on a Donkey

Three on a horse
Horse and cart
Horse, boy dog

Here's horse-back, horse-and-buggy, horse-and-wagon and horse-and-cart.

There is also the Brougham, the Buckboard, the Cabriolet and Charabanc. You remember the Covered Wagon, the Hansom Cab, the Sulky and the Surrey. And let’s not forget to mention the vehicle of choice in every Hollywood Western movie, the Stage Coach.

And there were many other names for horse powered vehicles.

Beside elephants, kids have their own array of vehicles.

Let's not forget the sled and sleigh.

Horse and Sleigh
Child and Sled

Then there's what my mother used to refer to as "Shank's Mule."

We touched on automobiles at the top of the page only briefly, so here are some more.

There are buses, trucks, vans, hearses, jeeps, tanks, limousines and some things I can't identify.

Tank

The LOST GALLERY has an extensive collection of abandoned photographs of aircraft. If you are interested in that sort of thing, see the index at the bottom of the page.

For our Sepia Saturday transportation exhibition we'll just present two of the most graceful.

The P-38 Lightning and the lovely Lockheed Constellation.

P-38
The Flying Dutchman

For transportation we shouldn't leave out Trains, Trams and Trolleys. Trains are plentiful but trams and trolleys are few in the collection.

I almost forgot, there is quite a variety of craft for water travel: rowboats and rafts, canoes and cabin cruisers.

The raft is sinking.

And finally, we can't leave out the most whimsical of all,
The Flying Saucer.

Here Gort stomps down the gang plank to terrorize Washington DC with his tank melting gaze.

Come to think of it, Gort might be of some help fixing Washington today.

Gort approaches.

So now let's start up, mount up, rev up and wind up back at the Sepia Saturday home page and find out what today's suggestion is REALLY about.

Or maybe you'd prefer just a list of all (well, most) of the categories and subjects and album pages

Feature - Someone We Would Like to Know

When a photograph is abandoned or lost, some of the story within it goes too; some, not all. A photograph travels through time stuck in the pages of a book or at the bottom of a shoebox, in a wrinkled old wallet or carefully stuck to the black pages of an old album. When it arrives in our time, it is without provenance. While we must guess at facts like the actual date of the photograph or the model of camera or the location, there is often a rich story left in the image itself.

For a few weeks on Fridays, LOST GALLERY will examine a photograph or two, let them tell their own story.

Today let's look at a portrait, an RPPC, that caught a personality.

Anna Smith - Henry Smith's Mother

Not often is this much character captured in a studio photograph, but when it happens, it is superlative. Wouldn’t you have loved to ask her just one question?

Look at that smile. She is about to burst into a laughter that will permeate your being. There is a humor about to envelop the room, an inner beauty that is an adventure, a love that immerses your heart in indelible joy and anticipation.

Look at that pose. She is ready to spring into a dance. Holding still is not in her repertoire. She is full of embraces and faces and affection. She would be comfortable in the garden swing or astride a palomino.

I would be honored to have shared an afternoon tea or a six-pack with her. Oh, the stories she could tell, the laughter she could share, the memories she could make.

I never knew her but I miss her terribly.

THE KIDS Lesson one. It is always a mystery how a photograph of any of these precious children could end up lost or abandoned. Here are a few. You will probably say "Ooh..." at least once.
