Album - Drusilla's Family

Sometimes LOST GALLERY acquires a dusty bin of jumbled photographs that later, on closer examination, reveal a few photographs that seem related.

By examining the age, physical format (paper size, deckled edge or straight trim), the photo-lab's stamp on the reverse and of course the actual content, they seem related, from the same camera, from the same family and sometimes taken just a few moments apart.

Here is another set of photographs rescued from a bin in an "antique" mall, this time in Wichita, Kansas.

There aren't many in this set, so this time, LOST GALLERY will present the original and an enhanced version for comparison.

All of them have names or a message written on the front of the print but only this print, labeled "Drusilla" on the front, has something written on the reverse.

Out of the Darkness - Rescuing old Tintypes - August 2014

For some, an old photograph loses its charm when "restored" to modern day clarity with all the age spots removed. Some photographs however, benefit greatly from just a nudge of enhancement. An improved contrast or the reversal of the yellowing brings out details that otherwise would have been missed and lost forever.

To please both camps of those who rescue old photographs, here are both the originals and the enhanced of just a few of the latest additions to Lost Gallery.

The old tintypes need a little boost sometimes. Instead of fading, the light parts of the photograph darken. By nature, a tintype is a bit dark to begin with.

Eventually, over time, depending on the care given them, they are lost in the dark shadows of obscurity. Here are a few that were brought back by adjusting the contrast a bit.

BACK PAGE - TINTYPES

This one is very tiny, only 1.75 inches X 2 inches. It is not on tin but on a sturdy card. It is obviously the same tintype process however.

The one at the right is also on a card, a miniature post card. It is 1.5 inches X 3.5 inches.

This is the postcard backing for the baby picture. It is not clearly printed and so far the manufacturer has not been identified and so dating is just a guess.

Let's All Go To The Movies - I Loved You Wednesday

Occasionally the search for old photographs finds the LOST GALLERY in the dark corner of a junk shop, elbow deep in a hat-box of ephemera. It's rare, but occasionally we see a familiar face ...

Recognize that guy on the left?

It's Victor Jory star of almost 200 films. Here is a movie still from the 1933 film "I loved you Wednesday" also starring Warner Baxter and Elissa Landi.

"I loved you Wednesday" was first a stage play. The play by Molly Ricardel and William DuBois, opened at the Sam H. Harris Theatre in New York on October 11, 1932, and ran for 63 performances. The cast included Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda and Rose Hobart.
