There was a time when there was no such dream as an actual color photograph.
So, photographs could be "tinted" by hand to boost the realism. Some of these old photographs are quite artistic.
Others, well, not so much ...
This one at the right, is lightly tinted and
has tiny "jewels" (probably glass chips)
added to the dress.
This one is a very subtle tint job
This has to be one of the worst.
This one is actually a very good job.
One is almost unaware that it has been tinted.
I can't decide if this is a tint job or not.

Gene knew eight people. They were all broke too.
This one is pretty good. One could almost believe it is a color photograph. Only the repeated colors of the background objects give it away.
This may be the worst tint job ever.

Well, this is not the worst but it's pretty bad.
Gertie always spelled her name wrong.
The figure is tinted fairly well but the background was done in a hurry.
Here is another good one. Very carefully done in muted tones resulting in a very lifelike portrait.
This one is 7 X 9.5 inches.
For the above photograph, the artist only used one color. And just for the socks and hats.
An budding surrealist no doubt.
Sometimes it turned out pretty well.
Sometimes it didn't.
Two colors here. Pink for the cheeks and gold for the brooch.

These are quite fun! The woman with the orange lipstick looks a bit like an old silent screen actress I used to see at the Hollywood Post Office. She always looked very pale with makeup on that looked like it had been applied and then purposely smeared in a downward motion.

ReplyDeleteI hope the woman with the orange lipstick rejected the print. It is really sloppily done. Well, come to think of it, most of them are. That was probably as good as they could expect back then.
