Lost Gallery: Seven

This week's Sepia Saturday suggestion:

Well I had to think about this one.

Is that guy on the right end wearing jodhpurs? I could go with that. I have lots of pictures of people in jodhpurs. But, I am not sure those are jodhpurs that fella is wearing. They might be gauchos or hiking pants or some other fashion garment beyond my scope..

Well, how about old photographs of people standing around in the street? I have a few of those. But, frankly, they're not very interesting.

Okay, how about this: I have a few rather interesting photographs of seven people; Just seven people posing for the snap.

A Gang of Seven.

No not that money grubbing bunch of politicians a couple decades ago, just seven nice people.

Okay, for example this snap has seven people in it. This one even has the same mix; Four women and three men.

Here's another: three guys, four gals.

Okay here's the gang all out on "Strawberrie Peek" for a day of posing!

Hm. Come to think of it, it appears to be three guys and four girls again...

Four girls, three guys... are we sensing a pattern here?

Did ya count them? Three guys, four girls.

Well, aside from the family groups, when you think about it, it's not so unusual. When there are four couples out for a day in the sun, one of them has to run the camera...

The rest of the examples are just co-incidence.

So let's look at some other groups of seven.

That guy's not paying attention.

As much as 17.5 percent of women under 40 do not care much about biplanes.

Yes, look again. There are seven in the picture.

Saved my favorite for the last again.

The boys didn’t quite grasp the concept of having their photograph taken. Besides, Aunt Marge had tripped and rolled down the hill. Now they knew the answer. It was neither bloomers nor pantaloons. It was plus-fours!

There are thousands of old photographs in the Lost Gallery collection. Some were purchased especially for their content or theme; others just came along with the acquisition of an album, or a bag full of unidentified ephemera. Some of the photographs are recognized as treasure and are individually packaged in hard plastic slips or envelopes. Others are glued, several at a time to both sides of an album page. Some are packed tightly together like a deck of cards; others wander about loose in the bottom of a shoe box with dozens of others. There are those included with friendship greeting cards. Tiny photo booth snaps turn up in diaries and yearbooks. Occasionally a family historian recognizes their aunt or grandfather and wants the picture for their genealogy work. It is very gratifying to be able to return a photo to its family. The first question they ask is: “Where did you find it?” Each group is filed according to where they were found and each photograph is tagged with the date it was scanned. Many are scanned and grouped by subject on Flickr: Head and Shoulder Portraits, Children, The Beach and other subjects. On Lost Gallery the photographs are further sorted and presented by subject and content: Hats, A girl and Her Uniformed Man, Sitting on a Bumper, Aircraft and dozens of other groups. It is entertaining to view a group of photographs of people all in the same pose or all doing the same thing. It is a curiosity to find four or five photographs that are completely unrelated except that they were taken at the same location. Lost Gallery is presented Blog Style with new groupings and subjects added every month. The exception to the blog style is that back pages are updated with new finds in each posted subject. Re-visiting a page will often find new photographs in that subject.	For this month Lost Gallery is presenting a special month-long project. This project presents at least one photograph each day showing the same number of people as the day of the month. For instance, on the tenth, there will be at least one photograph with ten people in it, on the fifteenth, fifteen people. Since there are lots of photographs of just seven people, presented here on the seventh day the month, are a few of the most popular in the collection.
