Album - Christmas Gathering

Here are three snapshots that were in a bag with about fifty other assorted prints. Judging from the format (square, deckle-edge), the photo-lab's stamp on the reverse and of course the content, they are related and apparently taken just a few moments apart.

It's a family get together for Christmas. It's daylight outside so let's say it is Christmas Morning or Day, not Christmas Eve.

There is more than enough body language here to keep an expert busy for a while.

What can you read into these?

Christmas group

Here we see first on the left an open gas flame heater. Not so popular now days.

There is a little girl sitting with good posture on the left, not affected by today's cell-phone, game console, hunch.

There is a boy in his favorite cowhide jacket. There is a Folgers Coffee can on the floor next to his foot.

Christmas group

On the coffee table, (visible in all three pictures) is what appears to be a camera.

The four adults sitting on the couch apparently didn't change places in any of the three shots.

This on seems to have at least partly posed. The lady standing, on the right, is headed for her chair and is seated in the third frame.

Party

This one feels more candid than the center print.

The body language changes in this one. It appears there are territories being outlined.

The man in the white shirt, squatting at the right end of the couch appears here for the first time. He may be the photographer in the other two.

Just for a little entertainment, I combined the three photographs just to see what it would look like. The three were taken from almost the same spot, so with a little stretching and nudging, the room looks like this. Only the boy in the cowhide jacket appears twice.

Mabel May-Yong filmography

After assembling an internet-scrapbook of items about Mabel May-Yong it was obvious that a filmography was needed.

Here is a list of the movies credited to Mabel May-Yong, in her various spellings. These have been collected from several sites on the web, some of them in German. Those were all translated with Google-Translate.

All the information has been consolidated. Where there are conflicting or multiple versions of facts, both versions are included with an "OR" separating them. All the sources that apply will be included at the last line of each.

These are the sources (so far):
Sources:
German Early Cinema Db
Filmweb
Steffi-line.de
Stiftung.de
FilmPortal.de
Film Zeit
Sinemalar.com
Movients.com
and of course good ol'
IMDb

Now here's the caution. These are all internet sourced and you know how reliable that can be. Noted at the end of each review are the sources that contributed to it. If a review used three or four sources it is possibly more reliable than a review that has only one source. But remember, some sites are just repeats of another site (as this one is).

This is a collection of search results for the term "Mabel May-Yong".
The information displayed can not be linked to a specific person and is collected entirely from public sources.

Opinoins vary on this one. Since, in the same period, there was also an actress named Mabel May, it is not positive that this credit is to her or to Mabel May-Yong. Mabel May is also is credited with fifteen other movies none of which lists her as Mabel May-Yong. Worse, there is no biographical information on either Mabel May or Mabel May-yong.

Note: Another movie was made the same year named “King Solomon’s Mines” with the leading character Allen Quatermain played by Albert Lawrence but without Mabel May-Yong. Scripts of both “Allan Quartermain” and “King Solomon’s Mines” were based on the H. Rider Haggard novel “King Solomon’s Mines”

The story and the character have been repeated many times in movie history by such as Cedric Hardwicke, Stewart Granger, Sean Connery, Patrick Swayze and twice by Richard Chamberlain.

Album - Mabel May Yong

After visiting the Cabinet Card Gallery page called Mabel May Yong the challenge to find something more about this mysterious actress was irresistible.

Google turned up seven sites discussing her appearance in up to 25 German silent movies. Among them are Sterri-lne.de (in German), European Film Star Postcards website and Cyranos.ch website plus a discussion group called “Silent Horror” message board. Obviously these copied information from one another and each inserts their own opinions about the name variations.

All of these sources tell almost the same story. Mable May-Yong appeared in movies and then disappeared. There is no biological information on her. All that remains beyond some of the movies, are six cabinet card poses printed apparently for promotional purposes.

A few hours spent on Ancestry.com following variations of the name (Mable May, Mabel May-Yong and Mable May Jong, with and without hyphens turned up nothing. The only obvious conclusion one could make is that the name was a stage name.

The next search was on Newspapers.com. It amazingly turned up four articles that included the name. They have been clipped and repeated on this page. One article, from the New York Times says her name is Baroness Alice Mabel von Schenck zu Schweinsberg and “danced” in Germany under the name Mabel May Yong.

So now it was back to Ancestry.com with that name and its variations and another hour that found nothing positive.

Following is a consolidation and paraphrase of what the above websites collected while omitting what appears to be speculation.

There’s no biographical data on Mabel May Yong (or any variation on that name). She apparently began her career as an “exotic” dancer in the mode of Mata Hari (1876-1917) the legendary Dutch dancer. She made her screen debut (as far as we know) as Queen Nyleptha in South African production “Allan Quatermain” (1919) by Horace Lisle Lucoque with Hal Lawrence as the title character in a script based on the novel “King Solomon’s Treasure” (with other title variations such as “King Solomon’s Mines”) by Henry Haggard from around 1885.

Apparently she mimed vampy actress Theda Bara in many of the roles that followed through 1922.

In 1923 she appeared in only one movie, “The Cabinet of Dr. Segato” and in 1925 her last known appearance was in the movie “Unsealed Lips” (sometimes translated “All Lips”) which apparently was a “Vampyre Movie”.

In all, she may have appeared in up to 28 silent movies.
IMDb lists 21 credits under Mabel May Yong, excluding the three titles from 1919 as suggested by Stefi-line.de.
Filmportal.de lists 23.
European Film Star Postcards website says 24 silent movies.
Steffi-line.de website says 25 (One movie is in three parts.)

Then, according to all accounts, she just disappears.

All that is left are sketchy accounts of the movies where she appeared and the seven promotional photographs and a few scant mentions in the newspapers of the era.

Now, speculation.

Did our exotic dancer possibly flee Germany and go back to the US to live? Schenck is not a very common name. Ancestry.com allowed a few connections in the right time frame. Some are obviously not our exotic dancer but others present a possible scenario.

In the timeline following, do any of the Census clues apply? There is one mention of an Alice Schenck in Pennsylvania; the rest are all in New York.

The 1905 New York State Census shows an Alice Schenck (b1885) boarding in Union, New York, working as a shoemaker.

The 1915 New York State Census shows an Alice Schenck (b1885) living with her mother Kate in Binghamton , New York, and working as shoemaker

Newspaper accounts from October 1914 through March 1915 show the known Mabel May Yong (Alice Mabel Schenck) was visiting the US from Germany. So the above two mentions of Alice Schenck, the shoe maker, can't apply.

In 1919 Mabel May Yong is credited in two movies (one in South Africa).

The 1920 US Census has an Alice M. Schneck (b1882), a widow, at the Lehigh County Almshouse in Pennsylvania.

In 1920 there are at least seven movies with Mabel May Yong included in the cast.

In 1921 there are at least seven movies with Mabel May Yong included in the cast.

In 1922 there are at least four movies with Mabel May Yong included in the cast.

In 1923 there is one movie listed with Mable May Yong in the cast.

In 1925 there is one movie listed with Mable May Yong in the cast.

The 1930 US Census has an Alice Schenck (b1884) living in Catskill, New York, with her husband Herman. They were married in about 1916 to 1918. (According to her film history, she should have been in Germany in 1919.)

Also in the 1930 US Census there is an Alixe Schenck (b1882) living in Rye, New York with her husband Stewart C. who is a real estate broker. (Spelling may be a census taker’s error or an accidental mark on the form.) Note also that her household "servant" Louise Kennedy was born in Germany.)

The 1940 US Census lists an Alice M. Schenck born 1885, living in New York, New York 1935-1940. Now a widow, no occupation listed.

Do any of these fit our exotic dancer? Some clues are obviously impossible.

Now, let's go to the movies!

While there seems very little on the life of our heroine Mabel May, there were many sources of information on the movies where she has credit. Most of these agree that although there are various spellings of her name, it's still the same Mabel May. Below is a copy of an advertisement for The Cabinet of Dr. Segato made in 1923 in which our Mabel May Yong is billed as Ma De Yongh. The experts say this is still Mabel May Yong.

Listed here are all the movies thought to include Mabel May Yong. This list is compiled from several sources and the sources do not always agree on the spelling or translation of the title, the actors, or even the dates.

UPDATE 20200810
A reader has added some information in the comment section showing some connections between Mabel May Yong and the wife of I.W. Schlesinger.

20200804 (see bottom of page)
May be its misleading, but "Mable May" was also the name of famous South African buisness tycoon I.W. Schlesinger's (1871-1949) wife: "Schlesinger married Mable May, at the time a well-known actress in Johannesburg." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I.W._Schlesinger). Being his wife, it would explain why she disappeard from the silver screen. It would make some sense if the owner of a cinema-chain married an actress that was famous for "exotic dance scenes".

20200810
Its interesting what you found out about Schlesinger's wife, but I can't remember a single source naming her not "Mabel May". Look at this: "I ought to mention here that African Film Productions led him (=Schlesinger) into an extremely enterprising and courages attempt to establish a film industry in South Africa. There was a number of epic films made at Killarney (studios in Joburg) - "The Voortrekkers", "The Symbol of Sacrifice", "King Solomon's Mines" and "Allan Quatermain," for which he imported actors, directors and cameramen. [...] They cost Schlesinger a great deal of money for of them all only "The Voortrekkers" showed a profit. But in after life he probably counted it as money well spent for they introduced him to Mabel May, the actress, who became his wife and whose lively personality was a great blessing to him." (cf. Cartwright, A. P. (1960): South Africa's Hall of Fame. Cape Town: CNA, p. 195).

Do you need another source mentioning similar facts? Here it is: "African Film Productions Limited was founded with the intention of making South African films for South African audiences and produced a dozen short fiction films in 1915-16. Most had topical flavour, involveing illicit gold buying and faithful servants. Schlesinger made sure that the talents of actress Mabel May were adequately displayed: he was to marry her and it was partly to further her career that he had founded African Film Productions Limited.[...] Legend: Miss Mabel May as Queen Nyleptha in a scene from the lavish prodcution of Haggard's story of Allan Quartermain in 1919: 'What, am I a queen, and yet not free to choose the man whom I shall love?'"; cf. JOYCE, Peter (ed.)(1981): Reader's Digest: South Africa's Yesterdays. Cape Town: The Reader's Digest Association of South Africa, p. 137. May be that helps to get things connected?

Here is a quote from WIKI:
May-Yong was born Alice Mabel Auguste Scharrer as the daughter of the businessman Max Richard Albrecht Scharrer and Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" Hoa-Mai (either from China or Vietnam).[1][2] She started her career as a belly dancer, wearing provocative costumes in the style of Mata-Hari, and adopted her exotic stage name.[5] May-Yong married in Magdeburg, purportedly into the Schenck zu Schweinsberg [de] noble family. In October 1914, months after the onset of World War I, she arrived in New York from Rotterdam on the ship Rotterdam, as Baroness Alice Schenk zu Schweinsberg, married and living in Berlin, but listing her father, Max Scharrer, living in Magdeburg, as her closest relative.[6] The New York Times of October 28, 1914, reported the arrival at the Astor Theatre of "Baroness Alice Mabel von Schenck zu Schweinsberg, who danced in Germany under the name of Mabel May Yong". [see above on thid psgr] She performed at Astor and at the Victoria Theatre and returned to Germany in January 1915.[5]

She crossed on the same steamer as Melvin A. Rise, a personal friend of Woodrow Wilson, who approached the German chancellor in Berlin "with a view of sounding them on peace", purportedly after the baroness (May-Yong) had suggested this to Wilson. The White House denied any knowledge of this and this action was said to have undermined Colonel House's peace envoy the next month.[8]

(Newspaper article about this is above on this page.)

May-Yong made her first known appearance in a movie in 1919 as Queen Nyleptha in Allan Quartermain, the first movie adaptation of the 1887 novel. After some 25 movies, her last known roles were in 1923 in Das Kabinett des Dr. Segat and in 1925 in Entsiegelte Lippen. She then disappeared from the public eye and her death is yet unknown.[5]

The article in the New York Times, October 28, 1914,may well be the "Rosetta Stone" telling us that Mabel May Yong is also Alice von Schenck.

"In German Wikipedia, it is stated (alongside with sources) that she died in 1968 in Bremen." (Thanks to a commenter! See comment section below.)

Back Page - The Best Girl and the Car

Just the right amount of Glam.

"You look great Honey. Stand over by the car and I'll take your picture!"

It is hard to decide which the boyfriend liked more, the girlfriend or the car, sometimes. I guess he figured if the girl ran away, he'd still have a good picture of the car.

And it looks as if the practice has been going on a long time.
