At the left is an actual sailor's uniform from WW2. Either the wide cape-like collar or the tied scarf/tie or both were adapted into women's fashions and some children's clothing about that time.
It was popular to say the least.

I do believe it was WWI that inspired the children's and women's fashions. The style that was fashionable during WW2 was much more fitted and stylish. These all appear to be part of the craze in the teens and 20s. I have several of my grandmother around 1918, my mother in the 1920s, and then my mother again in the 1940s in a fitted knee lenght dress with sailor collar.

ReplyDeleteI have noticed that the WW1 Sailor Uniforms seem a bit fancier than the later ones. The tie or scarf seemed to disappear and the collars got smaller. Even Popeye’s costume changed over the years and he eventually lost the tie altogether.
