Shortly after the camera became a common household item, and the photo-finishing shops began their brisk business, the photography companies began manufacturing darkroom supplies. One item that became common place was the deckled-edge photograph paper.
The deckled-edge snapshot became so popular that people began to "retro-fit" some older snapshots and even studio prints. They used pinking shears. I bet everyone that did this thought they were the only one to think of the idea.

And scrapbookers think it's so much fun to do this today. I remember using the blasted pinking shears and then looking at all the nasty little pieces on the floor I had to clean up.

Thanks Tattered and Lost. I can remember my mother doing that to some photographs too. I don't know where they are now. Vogueing. That's a new one one me. But I can see the connection, I think.
