Back Page - One Armed Chairs

Two children
N. A. Watkins - Rising Star, Texas

Those one-armed chairs.

Have you ever actually seen one outside of a photograph?

Were they actually used for anything but studio props?

My friend over at Tattered and Lost suggests that they were designed to accommodate the bustle, a popular garment that women loved to wear during that era.

This also might be a stool with a small back. It is not as high as the back of the chair on the left so let's say it is a chair arm.

Where's Papa?
Do you see something different here?
The one-arm is on the left.

THE KIDS Lesson one.
It is always a mystery to us how a photograph of any of these precious children could end up lost or abandoned. Here are a few. You will probably say "Ooh..." at least once.

  1. A friend said she believed they came about because of bustles. I think she might be onto something.

  2. That seems quite logical. I bet that was the reason. I have never actually seen one.
