Sepia Saturday - The Tent

For this Sepia Saturday Suggestion we have three children standing in a field with some poppies and a tent.

Lost Gallery has a display of photographs of Three Children already.

We looked to see if there were any tents anywhere in the LOST GALLERY photographs. Sure enough, there were a few.

So today for Sepia Saturday, lets look at some photographs that include a tent of some description.

A tent can be a make-shift play-house using a blanket and the clothesline in the back yard or it can be a serious temporary installation of canvas and wood.

WW1 Camp

Probably the best known use of tents is in the military. It offers portable shelter for many troops on the move.

What is Going On Here?
Fenster found his pick-pocket skills were useless in the army. No one had any money.

Bart was teaching the boys to fly.

But there are other activities where one will find a tent. Tents are used in Boy Scout Camps and Vacation Camps and just plain "roughing it" in the wilderness.

And there are tents at the beach, but there they are called a "cabanas".

Here's an ambitious tent using an automobile as a tent post.

And let's not overlook one of the earliest of tents: the Native American Teepee.

Negative files

And last we have an icy landscape at Bassingbourne Air Field. This is from a book of negatives that well document the activities at the base during the winter of 1944. This negative was labeled "P51s cub op tent".

These are P51 Mustang fighter planes parked near the runway at Bassingbourne. There is an operations tent in the distance. Think about what was going on in the winter of 1944.

Now hike on back to the
Sepia Saturday camp site home page and see what else has happened while you were gone.

Or maybe you'd prefer just a list of all (well, most) of the categories and subjects and album pages in LOST GALLERY! Here it is!

  1. As always, a fun enjoyable post. The Indian teepee in the circus tent reminded me of the one the then Stanford Indians band used to set up over the opening to a hidden tunnel in the middle of the football field. The band would go through the tunnel & come up into the tent, then march out onto the field - one after another, after another, after another . . . Everyone knew, of course, the tunnel was there, but it was still fun to see a whole college band come marching out of one little teepee.

    1. Thanks La Nightingale. I think I have seen that stunt with the marching band! It must have been in a movie because I have never been there.

  3. Is your Bassingbourne the Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire? I can relate to that photo as it's similar to scenes for my brother's war photos (from the Middle East).

    1. Thanks Bob Scotney. Yes, that's the one. I found more than two hundred 35mm negatives taken on the base in the winter of 1944 by a still unknown photographer. I have posted bits of the set here and there but I am working on a set of Lost Gallery pages that will show all of them. Meanwhile they are all stored in a set on Flickr if you would like to review all of them: https://www.flickr.com/photos/49024304@N00/sets/72157608125792619/

When found, they were a complete mystery. Over the years since their discovery many of the aircraft have been identified, dates and places have been established.

  4. I wondered at the photo of the tent over the car - was it more important to keep the car under cover than the humans? A varied selection of tent photos - thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks genepenn. I wondered that too. Perhaps it was a bit of shelter for both.

  6. All very creative spins on the theme this weekend. I like the two car as tent pole snaps which look like the same family. In those days camping was not the sophisticated recreation it is today, and with the limited motel accommodations on the old US routes, I can imagine it was the cheapest way to travel for families going across the country.

    1. Thanks Mike Brubaker. I think it is the same family too. And you are very right about the limited motel accommodations along the old state highways, before the interstate system developed. And they were expensive too. So families slept in their cars and caravans.

  7. Well you really covered the subject! So many to choose from. I YI YI so many to love. The slide looks very much like a painting. Too bad it's damaged, but with some cropping and a bit of creative work adding some new heads it really could be quite amazing. So colorful.

    1. Thanks Tattered and Lost. Yes, you are right. That slide looks like an illustration for a magazine. I was thinking of doing some restoration work on it too but it is way down on that list. I usually avoid photographs that are later than 1960 but that one was so striking I included it.

    1. Thanks Postcardy. I like that one too because I actually did some camping just like that once. Long time ago. It was a "72 Pinto hatchback.
