Occasionally a photograph turns up in LOST GALLERY that shows rituals or costumes or some activity that makes one curious. They seem to depict some sort of ceremony or celebration somewhere. Can you guess what is happening here?

Special events do bring the cameras out. And years later, we often have no idea what the snap shots are about.

I love the two pictures that are on the Navy Ships. What a wonderful find! Those are pictures of King Neptune and his court. I don't know the exact name of the ceremony. Many Naval Fleets (not just the US) hold an initiation for sailors when they cross the equator for the first time. Before crosssing the equator they are called "pollywogs" and after crossing and being initiated they are called "shellbacks". They dress up in silly costumes and there is always King Neptune and his court. There is more to it but you'd probably rather read it from a better source than myself. Man I would love to find pictures of this Navy rite of passage. Especially if they included my Grandpa Johnny Boren.
ReplyDeleteThank you Cheryl Ann for informative input on a couple of these photographs. I had suspected they might be something like that but I have absolutely no experience with that sort of travel. And yes it would be a plus if I found one with a relative in it too.
