I wonder who started this tradition.
Dress the baby in a smock that is sometimes twice the length of the child. Perhaps they are expected to "grow" into it.
There's nothing wrong with the tradition that I can think of. It's just that I wonder how a simple idea got so widespread. There must be a reason behind it.
Of course it is also called the "Christening Gown." The gown is often passed down generation to generation making it a family tradition.
This one isn't exactly a christening gown but seems it belongs on this page anyway.

Yeah…I've never understood those either. Christening dresses. Go take a gander online at some of the prices they charge for these things. Seriously twisted.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tattered and Lost. Yes, Christening Dresses. I couldn't think of that name. They were sometimes hand-made by grandmothers and spent most of their days tucked away in a cedar chest to be passed on to another generation, who will undoubtedly tuck it away in a cedar chest. I still think it is odd how those traditions develop. Don't get me started on wedding dresses.
