Let's All Go To The Movies - The Thing

Occasionally the search for old photographs finds your LOST GALLERY curator in the darkest corner of a junk shop, elbow deep in a hat-box of ephemera. It's rare, but occasionally we see a familiar face ...

Kenneth Toby. You know him. And there's one face you would easily recognize if it was on the screen very long: James Arness. He plays the Thing.

Scientists and American Air Force officials fend off a blood-thirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost.

The 1951 movie is actually titled "The Thing From Another World" but came to be known only as "The Thing".

The Thing from Another World is based on the short story 'Who Goes There?' by American science fiction writer John W. Campbell [1910-1971]. It was first published in the August 1938 issues of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, of which Campbell also became editor. The story was remade as The Thing in 1982, and a prequel, also called The Thing, was released in 2011. (From IMBD)

The boys find a body frozen in the ice. They chip it out in a block and return to the weather station with it. Later, in this picture, they find that the block has thawed and the body is gone.

Dr Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite), the one with the white beard, experiments with seeds he found on the severed hand of "The Thing". Well, it's part of the story. I guess you'll have to just see it yourself.
