Sepia Saturday - Silly Poses

This week the Sepia Saturday Suggestion is about silly and awkward poses.

Now there's a difference between a silly pose and a candid shot of someone caught in a silly pose. One is a deliberate set up and the other is just a lucky shot.

So let's look around LOST GALLERY and see what can be found on the subject of people posing for a silly photograph.

Costumed girls

That great gettin' up mornin'

Since some of these are just funny by nature, they were included in the book TALKING PICTURES with the captions they suggested. Some of the captions are included here.

Nurse Felton could not convince May-Belle that she was not a homeless chimpanzee. Not entirely anyway. Nurse Felton was not even certain of it herself. May-Belle did not seem to mind either way.

After Doctor Bent's revelation this morning, Nurse Felton was not completely sure of anything. But her plans were made and they would include neither Doctor Bent nor his valet.

Photographer Annie Greskin (not pictured) tried the Microsoft Hotline again and got a recording of the Three Stooges reminding callers that all lines were busy until 1993.

The above photograph is an example of early "trick" photography. Note in this case, both men are the same person. Commenter Susanna Rosalie has contributed these links to other examples of "trick" photography in the days before Photoshop.

Some distance up the beach, the vacationing entertainment and publicity director for Rockefeller Center suddenly got the idea for a dancing chorus line. Would it work?

And scrolling back, we see the women are much more adaptable at poking fun at themselves than men.

So laugh on back to the Sepia Saturday Home Page and see what other silliness is afoot.

THE KIDS Lesson one. It is always a mystery how a photograph of any of these precious children could end up lost or abandoned. Here are a few. You will probably say "Ooh..." at least once.

  1. Enjoyed your collection of silly poses!

The 'Fake Fight' photo with the two men in the studio caught my attention: I think maybe it is experimental manipulated photography, the man being one and the same. He sure looks alike, just wore a slightly different attire.
Imagine, what theme the photo then would get! :-)

    1. Thanks Susanna Rosalie. Yes I noticed that too. I think you are right that it is the same guy. As I recall there were two other photographs found with this one. I will go back and look at them again to see if I see anything different now.

  2. Now I found it where I've seen those kind of photomontages before: at the website Luminous-lint
Here are three examples, in the last one the man plays cards with himself. It is mentioned that usually the subject was the photographer himself. Interesting.

    2. You can see more of such photos at the blog of Heinz-Werner Lawo, a collector from Berlin. Here is the link, please srcoll down to the titles 'Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop' (which was by the way an exhibtion at the Metropolitan Museum in New York from Oct 2012 until Jan 2013) and 'A one man Company'.

    3. Great stuff Susanna Rosalie! I added links to these sites just under that "trick" photograph in the body of this page. Thanks!

  6. Susanna made a good call on the trick photo. It definitely is as clever as the ones on her links. As for silly photos, it's amazing how many people duplicated a pose. Grandpa in the garden on a tricycle wins my prize for oddest photo.

    1. Thanks Mike Brubaker. I added Susanna's links to the body of the page. And yes, I am always amazed at how often specific poses are repeated. There is a pose that I call "Chain Chain Chain" in which the subjects line up and strike the same pose, leaning the same way, or a hand on the hip or shoulder. Here is a link: http://lostgallery.blogspot.com/2013/12/back-page-chain-chain-chain-page-two.html
That fellow on the tricycle is a hoot.

  7. Fascinating, and they all thought they were the first to dream up that particular pose. The ladies in the barrel is the strangest.

    1. Thanks Little Nell. That's my thought too. They all thought it was an original pose. Yes, the pictures of the girls in the barrel are pretty odd. Looks like it might have been more trouble than it was worth.

I have a gallery on Flickr that has pictures of several beauty parlors all over the US and Canada and England. They're all named "Curl Up and Dye." They too probably thought they were the originators of the title. https://www.flickr.com/photos/49024304@N00/galleries/72157635305488216/

  9. Such a great collection of casual fun shots. So much nicer than "pose for grandma." And these are so rare to find.

And you're right. Five hands. There are five hands!!!
