Enhancement - Looking for Lost Details - March 2014

For some, an old photograph loses its charm when "restored" to modern day clarity with all the age spots removed. Some photographs however, benefit greatly from just a nudge of enhancement.

An improved contrast or the reversal of the yellowing brings out details that otherwise would have been missed and lost forever.

To please both camps of those who rescue old photographs, here are both the originals and the enhanced of just a few of the latest additions to Lost Gallery.

Again, there are some really good examples this month, where a little boost made a great difference. As always, nothing has been "repaired" but just enhanced a bit.

THE KIDS Lesson one. It is always a mystery how a photograph of any of these precious children could end up lost or abandoned. Here are a few. You will probably say "Ooh..." at least once.

  1. Very nice. It's a bit like a visit to the optometrist. Which is better? Number one or number two?
I like that last one which you've used before. The dad and little boy look like they have new overalls but the brother is still wearing a tattered old pair.

    1. Thanks Mike Brubaker. Sometimes draining off the yellow and adjusting the contrast doesn't do much, but sometimes it does wonders. I add to these "back" pages until they get to 25 rows or so and then cut the page back to 20 rows and start a new page with the left overs. That keeps the new pages from just having two or three pictures on them.

  2. I always like your enhancement photos! And how astonishing that one can see faces much better.

    1. Thank you Susanna Rosalie. Some of them don't change much but others benefit greatly from just a nudge. Originally I started to enhance old photographs to improve the way they looked. Then I began discovering details in them that I didn't know were there. So now I enhance most of them, just to see if I am overlooking anything.
