Enhancement - Looking for Lost Details

For some, an old photograph loses its charm when "restored" to modern day clarity with all the age spots removed. Some photographs however, benefit greatly from just a nudge of enhancement. An improved contrast or the reversal of the yellowing brings out details that otherwise would have been missed and lost forever.

To please both camps of those of us who rescue old photographs, here are both the originals and the enhanced of just a few of the latest additions to Lost Gallery.

Two children - original

Two Children
On this one the enhancement was very slight. But I tried something a little different here. I enlarged just the photo to improve the visibility of the detail but kept the original backboard intact.

School Group.

The sepia tone is much prettier I know. The original is the best in this case. But the detail that emerged by draining off the color was worth a look. The frame was enlarged on this one also.

Six Women - original

Six Women - enhanced
Contrast increased a bit on this one. Didn't help much.

Girl - original
Now, here's a worthwhile project!

Girl - enhanced
Drained the yellow and increased the contrast.
Helped a lot.

Bomber

Bomber
Lots of comment on this one. According to D.SHELEY this is a Bomber MB-1 of which only 130 were made, none surviving.

House 01 original
Here is an interesting bit. This is a print on very lightweight silver coated paper. It has been stored for a long time next to or in a paper envelope. I almost mistook it for just a scrap of soiled paper. If there had not been three of them together, I might not have taken a second look. Now I wish I had found them a few decades ago as so much has already been lost.
