Enhancement - Looking for Lost Details - January 2012

For some, an old photograph loses its charm when "restored" to modern day clarity with all the age spots removed. Some photographs however, benefit greatly from just a nudge of enhancement. An improved contrast or the reversal of the yellowing brings out details that otherwise would have been missed and lost forever.

To please both camps of those of us who rescue old photographs, here are both the originals and the enhanced of just a few of the latest additions to Lost Gallery.

This one was badly faded as well as yellowed.

Overexposed too.

Oh. So he's dowsing?

Turn it OVER! There's Something on the Back! Earl G. Hammock

This is apparently a portrait of artist/photographer Earl G. Hammock.

I think that just perhaps an industrious "antique" store proprietor might have added the signature on the "Hammons" portrait. He misread the name on the other and thought he was duplicating it. They do that because they think it adds interest to a photo.

But, the signature on the "Hammock" photo is so unique and crafted that it has to be the same man as the artist.

According to what I have been able to find so far, he was born in Knox, Texas, 11Feb 1896. That makes him just 19 in these photographs.

Here is a comparison using the signature on the reverse of the top photo and signatures taken from two paintings attributed to Earl G. Hammock. The similarity is obvious. The last letter “L” of the first name flows with a continuous stroke into the middle initial “G.”

Then the artist carefully combines the middle initial “G” with the first letter “H” of the last name. From there, the photograph signature is continued in cursive. The painting signatures finish with printed letters.

The photograph signature is an early one in 1915 and the paintings could be circa1950

The two painting signatures shown here are from askart.com and icollector.com and are used here for information purposes only.

Here is a brief family tree for Earl G. Hammock.

Although Earl G. apparently had no children, there are some of his two brothers descendants beginning in the far left column, that could claim him as an uncle. Their children would see him as great-uncle. The next generation would call him a great-great-uncle.

Ancestry.Com learns from a couple sources that Earl G. died in 1974. The art sites selling his paintings say it was 1971 and they probably copy from each other for the data.

Oddly, as illustrious as he was, there is NO adequate biography on the net for Earl G. Hammock.

These are paintings variously attributed to Earl G. Hammock. Considering the wide variance of styles shown here, there may be some error.

On the bottom row, the second and third are signed. The rest are speculation.

Armando Schwartz, who could only count to eight and not in any particular order, was in charge of the company accounting. Sarah and Solei Wulff sold zippers door to door every evening after tea. (Yes, a sort of fly-by-night operation.) (groan)

Tempelton Creepa had worked for years cleaning squirrel cages and was finally adversely affected by the fumes. He turned his attention to pancake collecting and imitating clocks.

Although his wife June was clever enough to get him dressed for this sitting, Templeton never quite understood what they were doing.

An alert photographer, just waking from an extended nap, caught this photo of Bart Beasley as he escaped quickly into the crowd. Beasley, a six-time loser, was eluding the law after accomplishing another in a long series of disreputable capers.

Already a six-time loser, Beasley, if caught and convicted one more time, will have to spend his next four Tuesday afternoons in the Double-T Tea Time, tea room, serving tea in tea cozies and tater-tots with tongs. And you thought our court system was too lenient!

Nobody knows what fiendish deed Beasley was up to this time but rest assured it will involve fire extinguishers, leg paint, a subway pass and a candy cane. It’s his favorite caper.

Album Page - Michael Jackson, new finds.

Back in June of 2009 there was a page of laserfax photographs presented on LOST GALLERY:
ALBUM PAGE - MICHAEL JACKSON.

These outmoded photographs from the early 1990's were rescued from a dumpster behind a small town newspaper. The staff was cleaning out the files, switching over to more modern methods of receiving and storing news photographs.

This year, five more turned up from the pile of a couple hundred of these yellowing, medium quality photographs.

At the original posting, a thoughtful discussion evolved about what it takes to be dubbed an “Icon”. See it HERE.

Some of the yellowing was digitally removed from the
photograph on the right, just to show how badly these have aged.

Laserfax photographs were never meant to be permanent or long lasting.

The Camera - Our only Time Machine

I found this Cabinet Card in a flea market in Kansas.

After scanning it looked like this.

Then the yellow was drained away and the contrast bumped for a little enhancement. Now it looks like this.

The reverse looks like this. It says

From this little bit of evidence, and some time on Ancestry.com, more information came to light.

It appears the picture had to have been posed in 1898 between April and September.

Poor Susa May died that year in September at the young age of 8. The baby Russell Jackson was born in April of that same year.

Many things were discovered about the family and their descendants. Days could be spent linking into the many branches of the family. There were many large families.

William himself was one of nine siblings.

One census reveals that William was a “farmer” and that he could not read or write but Amanda could. According to the 1910 census, twelve years after this photograph, the entire family was living in the home of a younger brother Gilbert Douglas Hostetter (1861-1933), and William was listed as doing “odd jobs”.

The couple had three more children after this photo, two of them not lasting a year. Still, many of the children lived long lives, three of them into their eighties, and Bertha reached 93. Mother Amanda, herself, lived 79 years; William only 70.

In 1910 the life expectancy in the US was 48.4 years for men and 51.8 for women. By 1980 it had reached only 70 and 77.4.

And of course, here, digitally, they will live long and interesting lives.

William's younger brother Albert Picket Hostetter (1864-1962), was married apparently about four times, had about 22 children and moved to Kansas in 1900.

That is probably why I now have this photograph.

Very often, notations on the reverse of these found photographs are obscure or too brief or illegible. Most often there is nothing at all.

But now and then there is a message from the past that sparkles.

Back in March of 2009 LOST GALLERY had a full page of photographs and their very interesting reverse sides. There have been many new additions to the collection since then.

Here is a new group of those photographs with mysterious, funny and sometimes puzzling reverse sides; tiny bits of history, reaching out to us over decades and sometimes a century.

I have been thinking lately about what Dorothy Parker said:

"Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses."

Of course, she was probably being satirical or sarcastic or cynical... One of those; She was good at all of them.

I don't think it is all that true, anyway. But women seem to think so. Out of about 700 head and shoulder photo-booth portraits I could find only eleven women with spectacles. Oddly there were only three photo-booth portraits of men with glasses.

The habit seems to relax eventually. Glasses become a fashion statement. Studio portraits and snapshots of women with spectacles seem to increase as time goes by.

Here is what could be found of women wearing glasses. It's limited to shots of just one person. Okay, except for the first one.

Memories of a Horsa Glider

This is a photograph of a Horsa Glider. It was used near the end of the second World War to transfer large numbers of troops to Europe.

This photograph is from a set of about 300 negatives rescued from a dumpster a few years ago. The photographs were centered around Bassingbourn Air Force base in the South of England the winter of 1944-1945.

The entire set was scanned and posted on Flickr. There have been many comments on the photographs giving identifications and connections to the various aircraft and locations.

Recently a Flickr member known as ‘fishfish_01” made this observation:

My father lived in the fuselage of one of these after the war in Salisbury next to the river Avon, where the Sea Cadet hut is now situated. They spent a few years in it.

I believe it was cut up into sections and used on a local farm for chicken houses. My dad remembers the glider well. As a child he thought it was very cool to live in and better than the bombed out house in Eastleigh near Southampton they lived in before. He said they had an AGA wood burning stove and the 'rooms' were separated by curtains.

He tells also of a very frugal Christmas, no meat around and rationing worse, not better. On Christmas morning his father walked in with a swan that had hit power lines near the glider. They ate well that Christmas.

He later added:

My fathers name: Robin Sanford, his sisters: June and Yvonne. Grandparents were Jack and Violet.

It was located at 51° 3'41.05"N - 1°47'37.58"W, next to the river.

A little investigation turned up the video at the right. I'm sure not all of them were this posh.
